Alteration Basics!

Tired of paying for someone else to hem your pants?  Fix holes or replace a zipper?  This is the class for you!  Join us for a 3-hour class where you will learn the basics of altering or repairing your clothing.  Different techniques may be taught to include hemming, replacing a zipper, placing or repairing buttonholes, taking in the waist of pants, taking in a shirt, etc.

Materials required and items necessary for making alterations and/or repairs.

  • Sewing machine and related accessories

  • Item(s) that need alteration and/or repair

  • Well-fitting shirt (that is similar to an oversized shirt that needs to be adjusted).
  •  Items specific to the alteration or repair (i.e. buttonhole foot, hem/blind hem foot, zipper/invisible zipper foot, zipper, buttons, etc.)

  • Thread(s) to match

  • Fabric Shears

  • Seam ripper

  • Pins

  • Hand sewing needles

  • Clover 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge or Hem Gauge (helpful for buttonholes, hemming, and other alteration measurements) Available for purchase at the Sewing Center of Wesley Chapel.

  • Marking tools

  • Fray Check / Fray Block

  • Tear-Away Stabilizer

  • Clover Buttonhole Cutter (optional)

  • Sewing basket with basic sewing tools and notions (pins, pin cushion, measuring tape, etc.)

Class Registration Policy

Registration will close 48 hours prior to the class date.  Waitlist positions may be available, or you can call the Sewing Center to register if space is available.

If we cancel a class due to enrollment or other reasons, you will be notified 48 hours prior to the date of the class and will receive a full refund or credit toward future classes.

We also require 48-hour notice should you need to cancel your attendance of a class in order to receive a full refund. No refunds will be given for any student cancellations made within 48 hours of the class date (or no-shows).

Class start times listed are when Instruction begins, so please make sure to arrive 20 minutes prior to class time to set up your machine.

Supply lists are provided for all classes and it is the student’s responsibility to bring all required supplies as well as basic sewing tools, sewing/embroidery machine, and related accessories to all classes. Please contact the Sewing Center prior to your class if you have any questions or need to purchase supplies.

Skill Level: intermediate
Skill Details: Must understand how to operate your sewing machine. If you have never sewn before, we recommend that you take Machine Basics and going through the Sewing 101, 201, and 301 series prior to taking additional project or technique classes.
